A 3 month food supply is enough food to feed your household for about 90 days without a trip to the store. It sounds like a lot, and it is, but the math is simple once you break it down. This guide walks through exactly how many calories and how much water you need, how to store it all, and how the two most popular 90-day kits from My Patriot Supply compare side by side.

90 day food supply: quick answer by family size
Using the FDA’s 2,000-calorie daily benchmark and Ready.gov’s guideline of at least one gallon of water per person per day, here’s what a 90 day food supply takes before you add water for cooking:
| People | Food for 90 days (calories) | Water for 90 days (drinking and sanitation) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 180,000 | 90 gallons |
| 2 | 360,000 | 180 gallons |
| 3 | 540,000 | 270 gallons |
| 4 | 720,000 | 360 gallons |
| 5 | 900,000 | 450 gallons |
What does 90 days of food look like? For one adult, the 3-Month Emergency Food Supply compared below is 6 stackable buckets weighing about 102.5 lbs. A family of four for 90 days needs roughly four times that: the 1-Year Emergency Food Supply, rated for four people for three months, is 24 buckets and about 410 lbs.
Why 90 days is suddenly on everyone’s mind
On September 30, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced FORTRESS America, an initiative to make major U.S. military bases able to run on their own power instead of the civilian grid. According to Pentagon documents reviewed by Fox News, major bases in the continental U.S. are being asked to plan to sustain essential operations for at least 90 days on their own. The Pentagon hasn’t released the memo publicly, and Snopes rates the reporting “mostly true.” Around the same time, Britain urged families to stockpile food and water (Fortune, Oct. 26).
If you’re here because of the news about the military’s 90-day plan, our FORTRESS America explained guide covers what has been confirmed and what is only reported.
None of that means a 90-day emergency is coming. It does show that serious planners treat three months as a sensible self-reliance window. For a family, a 3 month food supply is a cushion against job loss, a long illness, a major storm or a supply disruption, not just a doomsday scenario.
How many calories is a 3 month food supply?
Start a 3 month food supply with calories, not cans. The FDA uses 2,000 calories a day as a general guide for nutrition advice, while noting that real needs vary with age, sex, height, weight and activity. Using that benchmark:
- 1 adult: 90 days x 2,000 = 180,000 calories
- 2 adults: 360,000 calories
- Family of 4: 720,000 calories
Young children usually need less and very active adults usually need more, so treat these as planning numbers. Protein matters too: in a long disruption you want filling meals, not just carbs, so compare protein totals when you shop.
How much water does 90 days take?
Water is where most 90-day plans fall apart. Ready.gov advises storing at least one gallon of water per person per day for drinking and sanitation, and notes that hot weather can double what you need. Stretch that to 90 days and you get:
- 1 person: 90 gallons
- Family of 4: 360 gallons
Then add water to cook your food. Freeze-dried and dehydrated meals need it: the 3-Month Emergency Food Supply below needs about 36.12 gallons to prepare everything. Ready.gov also says water that wasn’t commercially bottled should be replaced every six months.
Storing 360+ gallons isn’t realistic for most homes, which is why a 90-day plan usually combines stored water for the first couple of weeks with a way to make more. A gravity filter like the Alexapure Pro Water Filtration System runs without electricity, has 2.5-gallon chambers, and the maker says it has been tested against 220+ contaminants. Our emergency water storage guide covers containers and rotation.
Three ways to build a 3 month food supply
- Grocery pantry only. Cheapest per calorie if you buy on sale, but canned and boxed food needs constant rotation, and 180,000 calories per person takes a lot of shelf space.
- A ready-made kit. Calories, variety and shelf life are already worked out. You store it and largely forget it.
- A hybrid (what most families do). Keep a few weeks of normal pantry food you rotate, and back it with a long-shelf-life kit for the rest.
3-Month vs MEGA 3-Month: specs side by side
My Patriot Supply sells two 90-day kits for one person. Here’s how they compare, using the specs on their product pages.
| Spec | 3-Month Emergency Food Supply | MEGA 3-Month Emergency Food & Protein Supply |
|---|---|---|
| Calories per day | 2,000+ | 2,400+ |
| Total calories | 181,960 | 216,240 |
| Total protein | 4,170 g | 5,592 g |
| Variety | 22 food and drink varieties, 846 servings | 33 food and drink varieties, 1,152 servings |
| Water to prepare | 36.12 gallons | 46.87 gallons |
| Storage | 6 stackable buckets, 102.53 lbs | Stackable buckets, 122.3 lbs |
| Coverage | 1 person for 3 months, 2 for 6 weeks, or 4 for 3 weeks | 1 person for 3 months, 2 for 6 weeks, or 4 for 3 weeks |
| Shelf life | Up to 25 years when stored properly | Up to 25 years when stored properly |
Which one fits you?
The 3-Month Emergency Food Supply hits the 2,000-calorie benchmark for 90 days and is the lighter, more compact option. It’s the straightforward choice for one average adult.
The MEGA 3-Month Emergency Food & Protein Supply adds extra protein, fruits, vegetables and snacks on top of the core meals, for 2,400+ calories a day. It makes more sense for larger or more active adults, anyone doing physical work during a disruption, or people who want more variety. The trade-off is about 20 more pounds and roughly 11 more gallons of prep water.
For a family of four
Either 90-day kit covers a family of four for only about three weeks. To give four people a full 3 month food supply at 2,000 calories each, you need about 720,000 calories. The 1-Year Emergency Food Supply is rated for exactly that: one person for a year, two people for six months or a family of four for three months. It holds 727,840 calories in 24 stackable buckets (410.13 lbs total) and needs about 144.5 gallons of water to prepare. For more options, see our emergency food supply for a family of 4 guide.
How to store a 90-day supply
A 3 month emergency food supply only helps if it’s still good when you need it. Storage is what protects that shelf life.
- Cool and dry. My Patriot Supply says to store its kits in a cool, dry location for maximum shelf life. For canned and shelf-stable food, the USDA says temperatures below 85°F are best, and to avoid spots above the stove, under the sink or in a damp garage or basement.
- Off the floor and stacked. Six buckets stack in a closet corner. Twenty-four need a dedicated spot, like a dry basement shelf or under beds.
- Open as you go. Per My Patriot Supply, unopened pouches keep their shelf life even after a bucket is opened. Keep them in the same cool, dry spot.
- Write it down. Keep a simple inventory sheet taped to the shelf with what you have and the date you bought it.
Don’t forget a way to cook your 3 month food supply
Most of these meals need hot water. If the power is out, you need a heat source that’s safe for where you’ll use it. The VESTA Self-Powered Indoor Space Heater & Stove works as both a small-room heater and a stove with no electricity, runs up to about 6 hours per can of fuel, and is designed for indoor use with adequate ventilation. Never use a charcoal grill or camp stove indoors. Our guide to emergency cooking without power covers more options, and our power outage emergency kit guide ties food, water, heat and light together.

Frequently asked questions
How much food is a 3 month food supply for one person?
About 180,000 calories, based on the FDA’s 2,000-calorie daily benchmark. Active adults may need more. The MEGA 3-Month kit provides 216,240 calories for that reason.
How much water do I need for 90 days?
Ready.gov’s guideline of one gallon per person per day works out to 90 gallons per person for drinking and sanitation, plus water to prepare your food. Most families store some water and rely on a filter for the rest.
Is a 3-month kit enough for a family of 4?
No. A one-person 90-day kit covers four people for about three weeks. For four people over three months, look at about 720,000 calories, which is what the 1-Year Emergency Food Supply is rated to cover.
How much water does a family of 4 need for 90 days?
At Ready.gov’s one gallon per person per day, a family of four needs 360 gallons for drinking and sanitation over 90 days, plus water to prepare food. A family of three needs 270 gallons and a family of five 450 gallons. Most families store a few weeks’ worth and use a filter for the rest.
How much food does a family of 5 need for 90 days?
About 900,000 calories at 2,000 calories per person per day. Young children usually need less and active adults more, so adjust for your household.
What does a 90 day food supply look like?
For one adult, a 90-day kit like the 3-Month Emergency Food Supply is 6 stackable buckets, about 102.5 lbs, that fit in a closet corner. For a family of four, plan on about 24 buckets, or a mix of pantry food you rotate plus long-shelf-life kits.
How long does a 3 month food supply last in storage?
My Patriot Supply lists a shelf life of up to 25 years when stored properly in a cool, dry place. Grocery-store canned food is much shorter: the USDA says high-acid canned foods keep best quality for 12 to 18 months and low-acid foods for 2 to 5 years.
The bottom line
A 3 month food supply comes down to three numbers: about 180,000 calories per adult, one gallon of water per person per day, and a safe way to cook. Build it in layers, start with a few weeks, and use the side-by-side specs above to pick the kit that fits your household.
